A reversible wrap maxi skirt that reveals different patterns with movement.
Designed as two apron-style skirts that can be worn together or separately, the skirt offers flexibility in how it is styled. Worn together, it creates shifting contrasts—a plaid base with glimpses of floral, or floral grounded by the structure of plaid. Each layer can also be worn on its own, styled as an apron skirt or layered over jeans, trousers, or another skirt. One side opens into a dense floral print, while the other is made from madras cotton in orange and blue, allowing the wearer to decide how much contrast is revealed.
The skirt is inspired by Monique Clesca, a writer and advocate whose life and work move between Haiti and the United States. Her career began in international development, where she focused on women’s and children’s rights. After leaving full-time work at the United Nations, she became a public feminist and pro-democracy voice in Haiti. Alongside this work, she has written fiction, essays, and memoir, including Silence and Resistance, which examines how personal history becomes political.
The two sides of the skirt draw from different parts of Monique Clesca’s story. The floral print points toward Haiti’s spiritual world and toward her grandmother, Grand Angele, a Vodou priestess whose presence shaped family memory. The madras cotton refers to another lineage marked by colonial history and to her French ancestor, whose legacy Clesca explores in her writing. Brought together through the skirt’s form, these elements remain visible, held in proximity, and carried forward through wear.
