Tursunay – Black Floral Jacquard Midi Skirt
A black floral jacquard midi skirt with a classic, mid-century silhouette.
This 1950s-inspired half-circle skirt features a full shape, side pockets, and an invisible zipper at the back. The jacquard fabric gives the skirt structure and weight, allowing it to hold its form while moving naturally with the body.
The design is inspired by Tursunay Ziyawudun, a Uyghur seamstress from the Xinjiang region of China who relocated to Maryland in 2018. Tursunay was forcibly detained in a Chinese “re-education” camp, where she spent two years. Her story is one among many shaped by systemic detention, surveillance, and the attempted erasure of Uyghur lives.
The skirt features large floral forms hand-embroidered with the names of Uyghur women. Each name is stitched deliberately, serving as a record and a refusal to forget. This skirt is dedicated to women whose names, language, and lives continue to endure:
Tursunay, Amina, Gulnisa, Shirin, Aynur, Mahinur, Perizat, Peride, Mihriban, Gulzar, Nilufer, Gulbahar.
