Crafted from structured denim, this skirt features a 1940s-inspired A-line shape with side pockets and an invisible zipper at the back. The fabric is durable while remaining comfortable to wear.
The skirt is inspired by Ella Kagan, a refusenik and the founder of the Shalom Education Center. Denim holds particular meaning in her story. During the Soviet Union’s Brezhnev era, jeans were scarce and traded on the black market. They became a way for refuseniks to support themselves, often brought by visitors from abroad.
When asked what she carried with her when leaving the Soviet Union, Ella spoke not of clothing, but of books. She brought her grandfather’s Bible, an early edition of Mikhail Lermontov’s poetry, and books belonging to her husband, Pavel. These objects marked continuity and personal identity.
This connection to books appears as a detachable fabric book printed on calico, chosen for its resemblance to aged paper. The book can be unbuttoned, read, or removed for washing, allowing the detail to remain tactile and present.
The printed pages include a reproduction of an 18th-century Jewish Passover Haggadah, a poem by Lermontov titled The Sail, and excerpts from immigration forms containing absurd questions. These elements point to displacement and the bureaucratic reality Ella faced.
The Ella Skirt can be worn as a party, evening, or wedding guest skirt. It pairs easily with a blouse and pumps, and can also be worn casually with a simple T-shirt and sneakers.
